You're either winning or you're learning in Triathlon!
My experience at Ironman Lake Placid was everything I knew it would be and more. I knew how tough the course was going to be and it didn't disappoint that's for sure. What I couldn't prepare for was how amazing the people and volunteers were, the beauty of the course and the energy and mystique of the race itself.
I didn't finish the race, however I came off the course at Mile 103 of the bike, stuck on the climb back into town with a calf cramp. I am happy with the body of work I put in knowing already where I had failed coming into the race. I didn't put the body of work in leading up to the race, I wasn't selfish enough with my training trying to juggle work, having my son for the Summer, and remodeling my kitchen at the same time. I wasn't able to get the big mile rides in necessary to set myself up for success. However, I still knew that I wanted to test myself so I put together a race strategy that worked if everything went perfect. Obviously, it didn't but I loved every second of it.
My favorite part was my son got to see me fail and getting to teach him a life lesson. I got to explain to him why I failed and even though I put in good amount of work towards this and worked really hard, that doesn't mean I earned success. I do now have more data to prepare me for when I come back and race it again. I told him it's difficult to give ourself 100 percent to multiple things at the same time and more than likely all of them will get a watered down version of our best. Of course there are people out there that can put some amazing things together at the same time like some of the pro athletes. They are awesome but we can't and shouldn't be competing or comparing ourselves with anyone. I love the saying " comparison is the thief of joy". It keeps me focused on just being better for myself and being happy with what lessons or data I was able to collect and how it will help me on the next one. He also gets to see that you only fail if you don't try again.
While I may not have succeeded this time, I didn't fail. I will be back in 2028 to run it back again!
And we will be cheering you on, Chaise!
Congratulations to all of you as there are too many to list here! Stay tuned for a spicy July with Musselman 70.3, Toledo 70.3, Ironman Lake Placid and The Leadville Stage Race on TAP.
